Acupuncture - What is it?

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is the world’s largest drug-free healthcare therapy. Acupuncture is a complex medical system that is used to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease and improve well being. It originated in China more than 3,000 years ago and, due to its proven effectiveness, has been embraced throughout the world. It involves the insertion of extremely fine pre-sterilised needles at predetermined points on the body’s surface to restore health on a physical, psychological and emotional level.

Acupuncture can be used alone or combined with other forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, commonly referred to as TCM, which can include the following:

Ø Moxibustion: a form of gentle and relaxing heat treatment, very effective for certain pains and
aches
Ø Dietary Advice: which is specialised in TCM terms
Ø Lifestyle Advice: This forms a crucial part of TCM in terms of eliminating factors that contribute to the cause or chronicity of health complaints
Ø Tuina: Chinese massage therapy

Acupuncture is also compatible with other systems of medicine such as Western medicine. Since TCM promotes the body’s natural healing ability, many conditions can be treated. It is also a comprehensive system of preventative healthcare and maintenance. Its effectiveness is well documented and has established a solid reputation as a system of medical healthcare that works.
